Post-emergent — grassy weeds
Crabgrass and foxtail rescue after they have already germinated.
Timing An afternoon
Typical months: May, Jun, Jul, Aug
Young crabgrass/foxtail is easier than mature clumps. Soil should be warm and weeds growing.
Soil gate: Soil temp unknown — Using calendar windows only
Why
Pre-em misses happen. Young plants are much easier than mature clumps.
Steps
- Confirm it is crabgrass/foxtail, not desirable grass going off-color.
- Treat while plants are small; mature clumps often need repeat passes or a different plan.
- Use a product labeled for your grass type (quinclorac-type is common on tall fescue).
- Water and mowing intervals follow the label — don’t assume same-day mow is fine.
What you need
Equipment
- Pump sprayer
- PPE — gloves, eye protection, long sleeves
Buy before you start
- Grassy-weed herbicide (quinclorac-type)
How much
Coverage tip: Spray one full tank on a known patch (e.g. a 20×50 ft rectangle = 1,000 sq ft) and enter that area here — walk speed and nozzle decide this more than the label.
Example fl oz per 1000 sq ft for a liquid crabgrass rescue. Must be labeled for YOUR grass.
Starting calculator only — confirm concentration and PPE on your product label before mixing. Tank size and coverage save in this browser.
Caveats
- A crabgrass killer safe on fescue can wreck bermuda in a mixed lawn (and the reverse).
- This is not a substitute for spring pre-emergent next year.
